What is AI technology? Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science dedicated to creating systems that can perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence. These tasks include learning from data, recognizing patterns, making decisions, and understanding natural language. AI systems aim to mimic cognitive functions such as perception, reasoning, and problem-solving, making them capable of handling complex activities that traditionally require human effort. AI is generally divided into two categories: Narrow AI and General AI. Narrow AI, also known as weak AI, is designed for specific tasks like virtual assistants (Siri, Alexa), recommendation systems (Netflix, Amazon), and self-driving cars. It excels within its specialized domain but does not possess general intelligence or understanding beyond its programmed tasks. General AI, or strong AI, would have the ability to perform any intellectual task that a human can, demonstrating broad cognitive abilities, but it remains largely theoretical and is a long-term goal of AI research.
